Introduction to Academic Honesty

thinking about academic honesty

Honesty is the key value in all academic activities and a core value at the University of Sydney link. One of the reasons why honesty is so important is its impact on trust. Without honesty it would be impossible to

  • Do research as we could not build on the work of others, and

  • Degrees would lose their meaning and value as a measure of individual ability and effort

In practice academic honesty means:

  1. Honesty in coursework

    1. All submitted work is appropriate referenced and product of the student named as the author.

    2. All work is marked fairly and clearly.

    3. All cases of academic dishonesty are openly dealt with according to University procedures.

    4. All relationships with staff are professional and supportive.

  2. Honesty in research

    1. All research methods and results are honestly presented.

    2. All previous work (including one’s own) is appropriate cited and referenced

    3. All affiliations are openly presented.
